Participants begin with foundation teaching before progressing into clinical observation, practical learning and professional development. The 3–6 month format provides time for participants to consolidate knowledge and consider how evidence-based ADHD assessment principles translate into clinical settings.
What does ADHD assessment training include?
The programme covers key areas of ADHD assessment, including clinical interviewing, information gathering, formulation and diagnostic decision-making.
Participants can also develop their clinical reasoning through a dedicated Differential Diagnosis Masterclass, exploring areas such as comorbidity, complexity, diagnostic uncertainty and differential diagnoses.
This reflects the importance of looking beyond a checklist approach to ADHD assessment. Effective assessment requires clinicians to consider the wider clinical picture and communicate their reasoning clearly.
Clinical report writing and diagnostic reasoning
Clinical report writing is another core component of the programme.
The Clinical Report Writing Masterclass focuses on developing clear and structured clinical reports, including evidence synthesis, formulation, diagnostic justification and recommendations.
For clinicians developing their ADHD assessment skills, being able to communicate assessment findings and clinical reasoning effectively is an important part of professional practice.
Clinical experience with real patients
A central feature of the programme is its focus on clinical experience.
The Institute highlights opportunities for participants to learn within clinical environments, including observation and patient-facing ADHD assessment activity where available. The programme also highlights work-placement opportunities within NHS and private neurodevelopmental settings.
Clinical opportunities are subject to availability and the relevant clinical arrangements. The programme is positioned around learning, supervised development, observation, feedback and competency-building rather than simply completing a training course.
For clinicians who already have theoretical knowledge of ADHD but are looking to understand how assessment works in practice, this practical element provides an opportunity to connect learning with real clinical environments.
Understanding ADHD within neurodiversity
ADHD does not exist in isolation from wider neurodevelopmental and individual differences.
The programme therefore includes a Neurodiversity Masterclass, supporting clinicians to develop a broader and more person-centred understanding of neurodevelopmental assessment and communication.
A further masterclass explores nutrition and holistic health, considering areas such as lifestyle, wellbeing and broader health considerations relevant to ADHD care. These topics are approached within appropriate professional and multidisciplinary boundaries and are not presented as methods to diagnose, treat or cure ADHD.
Case discussion and clinical development
Learning from individual cases can help clinicians develop their ability to bring different areas of knowledge together.
The programme includes MDT-style case discussion, providing opportunities to consider formulation, differential diagnosis, diagnostic decision-making and management thinking in a case-based context.
Where appropriate and subject to clinical availability, participants may also receive mentor or supervisor input, feedback and opportunities for competency-focused reflection.
